Families traditionally offer sweet treats like sugar melon and sticky rice cakes to the Kitchen God, hoping to "sweeten" his words and ensure a favorable report. This practice is symbolized by the saying, "Sweeten the mouth of the Kitchen God to speak well of us."
The Minor New Year is also a time for thorough cleaning and decoration. Families sweep and scrub their homes to rid them of bad luck and make way for good fortune in the coming year. This tradition is known as "sweeping the dust" and symbolizes the removal of the old to make way for the new. Additionally, homes are adorned with red couplets, lanterns, and other festive decorations to welcome the New Year with joy and prosperity.
